 | | Sailfish...from a Southern Skimmer skiff!by Adam Treadaway August 15, 2005 |
Fished Saturday out of Morehead City in my 19 foot Southern Skimmer and had
one of the best experiences of my life.
We started the day by spending an
hour catching 8 schooling spanish for supper all before entering the no wake
zone in the Turning Basin. We had enough for a meal, so we started out of
the inlet looking for a couple of Kings. We drove up on a tideline and
decided to give it a shot.
After setting out the first two rods we quickly
had two kings take off with our baits. One was a keeper and the other was
short. We baited back up, got four rods in the water and hooked up on a
23.5" spanish! Something hit one of our flatlines and stripped the bait, so
again we put on new bait and started the next adventure.
As I was letting the bait out, I noticed that the bait had gotten somewhat
heavy, so I put a little pressure on it and realized it was a fish. I locked
the reel, gave the rod a small hookset and the drag went off!
I quickly had
my brother-in-law real in the other three rods, but before we could get them
all in this fish was going to empty my spool. We put the boat in gear and ran
up to about 2500 rpm before gaining on the fish and as soon as we did gain,
the fun began.
The first tailwalk and the realization that I had hooked a
sailfish! After a 30 minute battle between the boat chase, the fish, and
myself, we finally managed to get it within twenty feet of the boat. As we
tried to get it past that last bit of line, it would tailwalk everytime I
would put pressure on the fish, but finally it gave in.
We grabbed it by the
bill, lifted in the boat, and energized with excitement. We had landed a 66"
Sailfish from a 19 foot Southern Skimmer!
I reached for the digital camera
to take some photos before the release because I knew everyone would
question the catch, but the batteries were dead! Thanks for Technology! I
pulled out my cell phone with a built in digital camera and got my proof, as
you can see above.
The day did not end there, we managed to land three more keeper Kings and
use up 5lbs of cigar minnows before calling it a day....and what a day it
was!
